In 1991, with the blessing of His Holiness and Beatitude Ilia II, Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, the Bodbe Convent was re-established. Since then, the revival of this ancient monastic community has continued. The Church of Saint George has been restored, the sisters’ cells renewed, and the convent’s refectory painted with frescoes.
At Saint Nino’s Spring, an enclosure for immersion at the holy water was built, together with a church dedicated to the saint’s parents, Saints Zabulon and Sosana. A cathedral in honour of Saint Nino has also been constructed, along with small churches dedicated to Saint Tamar the Confessor and Saint Gabriel the Fool-for-Christ.
The convent maintains its own farm and has workshops for icon painting and handicrafts. The sisters also prepare liturgical books for publication, based on ancient Georgian manuscripts.
All of this has been made possible through the support of generous benefactors, among whom are Nina Kostina, Archil Gegenava, and Lasha Papashvili.
At present, the convent is home to thirty-two nuns and novices. The abbess of the convent is Mother Theodora (Makhviladze).
