St. John of Bodbe

St. John of Bodbe
Before the abolition of the Bodbe Diocese by the Russian Exarchate, its last bishop was the distinguished churchman John of Bodbe (Makashvili). Through his devoted service, the monastery was once again renewed in 1823: the interior of the Church of Saint George was painted, a new iconostasis was installed, which was later fully restored in 2014, and a bishop’s residence with a court chapel was also built.

At that time, a theological seminary was active in Bodbe. Bishop John Makashvili reposed in 1837. With his death, the Bodbe Diocese was abolished, and both the monastery and the seminary ceased to operate. He is buried in front of the northern pillar of the Church of Saint George.
